Busy seeing the world... Brussels, Amsterdam, Cologne and London

Chocolate City- Brussels
You probably thought that after my last post that it would be the last of me blogging, but the title of my blog is 'Barbados meets France and beyond' and this my friends, is beyond. We all know that I cannot keep quiet for too long. I have to be doing something or going somewhere and this time I went to Belgium, Amsterdam, Germany and London. Brussels was the first stop, or what we (the crew) call it; the 'Chocolate City'. I mean, we couldn't go to Belgium and not have Belgian chocolates...that's like coming to Paris and not getting a picture by the Eiffel Tower... Madness!! Anyways, besides the chocolates, there is more to Belgium, like waffles, lol, the Manneken Pis ( a smallllll statue of a little boy peeing) and of course the skyscrapers. I mean, those buildings were hugeeeee. Going back a little to me stressing on the word 'small' to describe the statue....think of the Mona Lisa painting, now think smaller, lol. I guess the saying 'big things come in small packages' can apply to these. Nonetheless, Brussels was a beautiful place and I loved the atmosphere. Going back to the chocolates...our hostel was close to a chocolate factory and every time we walked past you could just smell the chocolate. I left there with two boxes of chocolates; one is a mixed box, where I can taste all the different kinds and the other one is a box of truffles. I'm not done there because I have to take home a box of Jeff de Bruges chocolates from here (Paris) and when I get to London, I have to get a box of Cadbury chocolates as well, lol. Judging my rant about chocolates it is evident that I'm a chocoholic and I'm not shame to admit it and I'm going to share them when I get home....I think...🙈. Anyways, the point is, I went to the chocolate city and I got my authentic Belgian chocolates.

Sin City- Amsterdam
Next up was Amsterdam. It's unbelievable how I'm going to these places that some people only thought about, but here I was, in Amsterdam. The first thing I noticed was the amount of bicycles there were. I thought the French had the bicycles, but in Amsterdam...they won that hands down! It was actually quite interesting to be in Amsterdam to be honest. Of course there was the Red Light District, the 'Condomeries' (condom shop), obviously sex shops and an actual sex museum and who can forget weed and there was also a weed museum. You can understand why then that Amsterdam takes the name 'Sin City', lol. However, I have to admit that Amsterdam is beautiful as well. Their buildings' architecture is simply amazing, it gives off this Venice like feel to it. Honestly, while in Amsterdam, we felt like going to Venice, like we were making plans, but that was short lived because it was expensive to go, but another time :). In addition to seeing the beautiful architecture, we went to the 'I Am Sterdam' letters, to Anne Frank's house and also to the bench that was in that famous movie 'The Fault in our Stars'. There was also Van Gogh's museum and who can forget the beautiful tulips? I also admired Amsterdam for their tulips :). However, like all journeys, this one had to come to an end and it was yet again, on to the next one.

Church City- Cologne
The next one was Cologne. This one is termed as 'Church City' because looking at the map...well...all we saw were churches, lol. There's no doubt that Cologne is beautiful, but we didn't do as much, compared to the other two countries. Nonetheless, we still had fun. I remember the night we had an 'impromptu soirée'. We were to go across to the bridge during the day, but instead we went back to the hostel and slept and before we knew it, it was night (midnight). However, it was suggested that we still go, lol. It was crazy, but spontaneous decisions are always the best (and the most fun), so...that's what we did, lol. As much as I have seen the churches/ cathedrals in the past countries I've visited, I'm still amazed at the new ones I see and Cologne is one of them. The details, the architecture, just everything about the cathedral is amazing and I'm glad I got to see them with my eyes :).

On arrive! Cologne :)

London baby!!!
Of course we couldn't travel around and not go to London! We went to Buckingham Palace, to Westminster Abbey, Big Ben, the London Eye, went on the London Bridge (and there was no doubt that I started to sing 'London Bridge is falling down' in my mind, lol) and from the bridge we could also see the Tower Bridge. Believe it or not we walked around London. The only time we took transportation was when we were going shopping and we took the London Underground, but on our way back to the hostel, we walked. It was long, but it wasn't too bad. I mean I'm accustomed to walking because that was what I was doing since I went France and traveling around, so that part was fine. Although it might be a lot of walking, I still think you get to see more things than if you were driving around, so not bad. I also saw my last name on a street :). I had to go to London to see my last name, lol...well...it was worth the trip, even though I didn't know I would see my name :).

Overall all the traveling I did was AMAZING!!! I went to France, did what I had to do and now that chapter has come to an end. This post is actually the last post for this blog. A bit sad, but... I'm still glad that I got to share my wonderful experiences with you and I thank you for reading all about them. This is as I said is the end of this chapter, but it's certainly not the last of me traveling around the world. This is only the beginning :), so until then...thank you.

The hardest part is saying goodbye...

Mission accomplished!!

I can't express how excited and proud of myself for completing this journey I've set out to do! This experience has been AMAZINGGGGGG!! I've met some wonderful people and my students were simply amazing. There were times it was tiring, but that's all in the job and I would do it all again. The last days in school were emotional, because...well...it was the last time I was going to see my students. They all made little cards, drew pictures, wrote up the whiteboards etc, expressing their gratitude and who didn't do that, made cupcakes or cookies or bought me pastries 😊. My teachers were equally amazing. From the very beginning they were there for me, helping me along the way and they tried their best not to send me the 'hard ears' students, :p, no, but seriously, none of the students I had gave me any trouble. I had to do a lot of talking, but not in the sense of disciplining them, so that was good. Well...I can happily say then that I, Jalasheia, came, saw and conquered and this mission is accomplished!!!

Au revoir Avignon!

I can't believe I'm saying goodbye to Avignon already, I mean I just got here! It wasn't so long ago that I stepped foot in France and already I'm leaving. Avignon is my home away from home. The people there were nice. I mainly lived close to nearly everything, like the shopping stores, supermarkets, etc, so I didn't have far to walk if I had to go anywhere, so that was even better. I've just grown to love there despite the crazy french drivers and their roads I don't think I'll ever understand, lol. I mean the lights are on green for the crosswalk man, for PEDESTRIANS, but somehow you still see cars coming... Thank goodness I made it out alive! Lol, and to think I wanted to rent a bicycle...crazy me! Honestly, despite the crazy drivers, I still enjoyed my time living there. Yesterday as I left there (for good), to come to Paris, I felt extremely sad. I had that same feeling when I left Barbados. All I was saying to myself was 'whyyyyyy', but despite me leaving my 'home', I can say that I've been there, but this isn't the last time. Although my title says 'goodbye Avignon', that's for now, but I meant to say until we meet again, because I have to come back, so it's a 'see you later Avignon' at this moment. The hardest part is really and truly saying goodbye...but I enjoyed every moment of living there and this is only the beginning...!😊

1,2,3

The title of this post is 1,2,3 and that my readers, is the number of kisses on the cheeks the french give  as a greeting. Man I never did so much kissing until now, since being here in France. I might go back home kissing people on the cheek, now that I've gotten so used to doing it here, lol. So watch out my friends, I'm not going to give you hugs, I'm going to start giving you the french greeting of 1,2,3 kisses! Another thing they do or rather say is 'cou cou' that's saying hello to your very close friends. I mean they say 'bonjour', but you would know that, that person is a close friend when you hear 'cou cou'. Imagine how surprised I was when I first heard it, because in my mind cou cou is what we eat back home and here it actually means hello. My students were equally surprised during the first weeks of meeting them and me showing them a little Powerpoint presentation I did on Barbados. Let me tell you, when they saw that we eat 'cou cou' they laughed, lol. I had to tell them same word, but totally different meaning, lol. Ya gotta love the french!

Must love dogs...
Another thing the French love more than kissing, is their animals! My goodness, they take their pets everywhere with them! Going to the bank, going shopping, going to a café, going to the supermarket...their dogs are there! Well if they are going to the supermarket then they have to leave their dogs outside, but the point is, they are everywhere!! I've never seen so much dogs all at once, until I came here, lol. It's so crazy that I was thinking I should get a dog too, lol, but I won't, because I'm kind of afraid of dogs...and cats, lol. It's funny because I had a dog... Anyways, most of them are on a leash and you have those few which aren't on any, so I find myself crossing over on the other side of the road to avoid being attacked, since it seems like I look like I want to play, or maybe I look like food, lol. I'll give you a joke about that. One Saturday Rachel and I went sightseeing in Cavaillon (a town close to Avignon), so while walking to go back to like the city centre, we saw a dog, a small dog, looked like one of those ankle biters, lol and worst of all, it wasn't on a leash!! Now Rachel and I stopped because it started barking at us. I was already shaking and I wasn't playing that game with that dog, so I crossed the road, thinking it didn't see me...it did! That thing was charging at me, lol. I screamed so hard, that the dog turned around, lol. I think the dog was more afraid of my screams, lol. Madness!! But if that wasn't enough...I got attacked again, but this time in Lisbon! What is wrong with these dogs?? There I was minding my own business, talking to Rachel and out of the blue, this dog charged at me! What? Do I look like food? I'm not your friend! Smh. I was terrified and of course I screamed out loud. The worse part was that this dog had a muzzle on, so in my opinion it should have been on a leash and to top it off the owner of it was sitting there, talking a load of what I'd call rubbish, before she come and hold her dog... Stupse. Anyways, so that's my experience I had here with dogs. The first one was kind of funny...well everytime I sit and think about it, lol, but the second attack....NO!

French food
Where to start with this...? Mannnn I love french food, especially the crêpes, baguettes, their pastries, something called 'Tartiflette' which is basically potatoes cut into pieces, with bacon and a cheese only for the Tartiflette, then it's baked in the oven. Perfection! My upstairs neighbor made it a time and it had me singing, lol and I mean singing! Yesssss! That was absolutely amazing! I tried making it myself and it came out good, but I preferred his 🙈. Another thing I had was 'Raclette'. This involves cheese, potatoes and ham. I guess you can use whatever you want, but that's what I had. Like the Tartiflette, this recipe calls for a particular cheese or cheeses....yea...we eat a lot of cheese! Look at me saying 'we' like I'm french, lol. Well I lived here for about 8 months so I can say it! :p. This also calls for a 'Raclette maker' for the lack of better words. This recipe real special, I'm going to miss it, well all of the french foods. Anything else I missed?? Well even if I did, forgive me, I just love food on the whole. Not my fault it tastes so good! Oh yea, how can I forget the wine?? I can say that I'm more of a white wine type of lady. No, I don't have it all the time with my meals, but I really do like the wine! I'm thinking of bringing home a bottle or two, because one, it's cheap and two it tastes good and it's cheap 😜. Wine, chocolates, baguettes,....I wish I could bring back everything!

When in Rome!

For the winter holiday in February yours truly went to Italy and Portugal! We all know that I can't stay put. I live for these holidays so that I can just travel around Europe (or try to, for the most part, lol). Well Kamz and Risse went too, as well as Rachel. We had a ball! We went to Rome, Florence and Milan. Wait a minute, here I am talking about Italy but I'm missing out an important detail... Let me rewind a little. Before the holiday in Italy began, Rachel and I spontaneously went to Lyon to see Katy Perry live in concert! Crazy I know! But you often hear the best decisions are the spontaneous ones. :). How did we even...? Well we were watching some video about her, showed her performing/ touring a bit throughout it, then one of us had an idea to see if she had any concerts coming up. It was going to be a long shot, but it still wouldn't hurt to look. To our surprise she was actually doing her Prismatic World Tour in Lyon on the day that our holiday started!! Talk about meant to be!! I can't tell you how excited we both were and without even thinking about it, I said let's go. Bam! We bought the tickets (which were cheap) and then we also bought our train tickets to Lyon, plus we had to look for a place to stay for the one night we were going to be there. Bam! Bam! Bam! That was done, lol. I remember trying not to get too excited before I could actually hold the ticket in my hand, but when I got that ticket (same day we bought them), I went bananas (well not really, I was just super excited lol). It was a good feeling that day. I don't have to tell you that from then on we were counting down the days to her concert. When that night finally arrived and being there seeing Katy Perry live, I was in awe. Of course I freaked out! Come on! This is a girl who cried when I saw the top of the Eiffel Tower, lol. You didn't think I'd freak out about Katy?? Lol. But honestly, I was really happy that I got to see her and it was my first concert ever, so...it was great and she performed well, so cheers to her! That was that on my pre-holiday. I really had a ball; Katy Perry and Italy too and on top of that Portugal?? Hold me back! Lol. Ok, now going back to talking about Italy. We had 11 days to travel to these places. 11 days? Challenge accepted! We spent like three days in Rome, two in Florence, one in Milan, two in Lisbon and two in Porto. To add to that, we took like four planes in that space of time... FOUR!!, plus trains too, we also took trains. Haha. Madness! According to Risse, we too like to be in transit and my friend, tu as raison (you are right). We managed to visit those 'important' places, like the Colosseum, the Vatican City, the famous Cathedrals, The Pantheon, Trevi Fountain (which was unfortunately under construction). This was in Rome. Of course we did more sightseeing around the city, but those were the main important things we did/saw. In Florence, we visited The Uffizi Gallery, the Ponte Vecchio, the Campanile de Giotto and we also saw or rather went up to where Michelangelo's statue. Well in Milan, we only spent like a day, so not much we did. However, there was Milan Fashion Week (how exciting!) :) no, I didn't see any famous people....or did I?, but I wouldn't know, I don't know any Italian fashion models...oops! For me it was more the fashion city, with all of the high end stores, but nonetheless it was still a beautiful place to see. We also went to the football stadium, but not much (or rather nothing) was going on, but it was cool to say I've been there 😊. Now on to the next stop; Portugal. We went to Lisbon and Porto. In Lisbon we went to the Cathedrale and also to the Castelo de Sao Jorge, along with the usual sightseeing around the city. To end the trip, in Porto, did some walking around the city, admired the buildings, was loving the beautiful sunshine, I can tell you that, lol and we also went to another little city called the 'Vila Nova de GAIA'. This area was the wine spot, but unfortunately we couldn't taste any port wine because the shops/ cellars were already closed. I could probably go on about the other places/ things we saw....but I don't remember lol. However, those I've mentioned were the most important and to add to that list I can't forget the gelato I've eaten, but of course! I was super excited to find a gelateria in Portugal. I love gelato! Well I love ice cream on the whole, but I love gelato, lol. In Portugal, however, was this delicious custard pie, that oh my goodness makes me sing, lol. That thing was so good and add some cinnamon on top of it...? Heavennnn, lol. I was so angry at myself coming back home (Avignon), because they were selling like 6 of them in a box at the airport, but what did I do? I Jalasheia Shakira Harewood didn't buy them, smh, lol. I regretted it after! I couldn't believe I didn't buy them. Crazy people do crazy things! Crazy me! Lol. Well at least I got to live in those moments I ate them.
